Restricting use of Cell Phones for Commercial Drivers with Smith Insurance in Rochester New York

12.01.12

Are you the owner of a business with a fleet of drivers, do you only have a couple of trucks on the road, or are you a commercial driver?  If any of these scenarios describe your profession, then you need to be aware that the FMCSA and PHMSA are constantly amending the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and the Hazardous Materials Regulations to restrict the use of hand-held mobile telephones by drivers of commercial vehicles.  This tightening of rules is meant to improve safety on the Nation’s highways, but will also affect your drivers, and consequently, your New York commercial auto insurance.

Make sure to keep your drivers up to date on the latest laws because if they get tickets, then you will get higher Rochester Insurance premiums….and no one wants that!

Identity Theft Protection from Smith Insurance in Rochester, NY

28.12.11

I hope your holidays were joyful! If you’re like most people, you used your credit cards a little more often than usual last month. And that makes me think

Identity Theft protection with your Homeowners Insurance from Smith Insurance in Rochester NY
Identity Theft protection with your Homeowners Insurance from Smith Insurance in Rochester NY

about something that could turn the whole season sour … Identity Theft.

Identity theft occurs when someone obtains and uses your personal information. They might buy things, obtain loans, commit crimes and even get jobs in your name – along the way destroying your good name and your credit record.

Identity theft is a serious crime and is on the rise. Victims can be refused loans, housing or cars … and even be arrested for crimes they didn’t commit, according to the Federal Trade Commission. That’s pretty scary. And it can take months – or even years – to straighten it all out.

The Internet is crawling with information on Identity Theft, so I’ve put in some website links that you might want to check out at the end of this email for more information – especially if you think your personal information is being used by someone else.

But first, I have some tips from a Federal Trade Commission report on minimizing your risk:

  • Order your credit report and check it out. Make sure the stuff on the report belongs to you. The credit bureaus have procedures for contesting information on your report.
  • Place passwords on your credit card, bank and phone accounts. And don’t use real information that can be easily found. For example, use a totally different name or word for your mother’s maiden name when setting up security on your accounts.
  • Don’t give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or on the Internet unless you’re sure of whom you’re dealing with.
  • Guard your mail. Deposit out-going mail in a mailbox or at the post office. And collect your inbound mail from your box promptly.
  • Guard your trash. Tear up or shred documents with any of your personal information on it.
  • Don’t carry your Social Security card with you. Keep it secure. And don’t give out your SSN unless the business who wants it can give you a valid reason for needing it.

I could go on for pages. Like I said above, there’s tons of information on the Internet. Just do a search on Identity Theft Tips. Here are some sites you can check out.

All of us here at Smith Insurance in Rochester, NY hope you never suffer through the frustration of identity theft. I hope these tips can help you or someone you love avoid it … or get it cleaned up quickly if it happens.

PS -  It’s sad, but there are people in this world who will take everything you have if given the chance. Of course, your Rochester homeowners insurance might foot the bill … but only if you have enough. If you don’t it could literally ruin your financial life. Good news …

A million dollars of protection can be as little as $12 a month! Erase your worries and your fears. Contact us today about a Personal Umbrella policy.

Safety During the Holiday Season from Smith Insurance in Rochester

22.12.11

New York Home Insurance with Gerard P Smith Insurance

New York Home Insurance with Gerard P Smith Insurance

The Holiday Season in New York is associated with family get-togethers, great family meals, and beautiful home decorations including lights, candles, and Christmas trees.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires. Nearly all cooking fires start with the ignition of food or cooking oil. Other items normally found in a kitchen help feed the fire – such as cabinets, paper, plastic, and curtains. In 2006, U.S. fire departments responded to 112,500 home structure fires. These fires caused nearly $7 billion in direct property damage. Cooking fires accounted for 40% of all reported home fires. Twelve percent of the fires occurred when something flammable was left too close to cooking equipment.
The CDC and the National Fire Protection Association recommend:
• Stay in the kitchen when cooking. If you must leave the kitchen for any reason, turn off the stovetop.
• If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you to check the food.
• Wear short, close fitting sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can easily catch fire.
• Never use water to extinguish a cooking fire.
• If oil starts to boil, remove it from the heat source. Simply lowering the heat will not reduce the temperature fast enough.
• Be careful not to overfill pots with oil. You need room in the pan to add food. Overflowing oil can easily catch fire.
• If oil catches fire, use an oven mitt to carefully slide a lid over the pan to smother the fire.
• If oil has overflowed and is burning, get everyone out of the house and call the fire department from outside.
• Keep towels, bags, plastic, and food packaging away from flame and heat.
• Never cook when under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
• Install smoke alarms if a home does not have them.
• Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.
Make sure that you stay safe this holiday season, and protect your home with the right Rochester Homeowners Insurance policy.  Call the Smith Insurance Agency in Webster, NY at 585-872-5700 to make sure that you have the best protection possible!

Insurance Reminders from Smith Insurance in Rochester NY

20.12.11

We are getting to the time of year that most of us take a hard look at our lives, usually with a view to making improvements. With that in mind, here are three aspects you should be thinking about concerning your insurance:

Homeowners/Renters Insurance: The value of your property most likely hasn’t gone up, but rebuilding costs have in most cases. What about your contents? As the years go by, the amount and value of our possessions increase which creates a need for higher policy limits.

Life Insurance: If you’ve taken on new financial commitments or your family has grown, so has your need for adequate life insurance coverage.

Special Needs: There’s no doubt that the risk of natural disaster threatens all of us in some way. These risks are not normally covered in your homeowners or renters insurance.

Insurance is all about protection for yourself, your property and your family. None of us can predict the future but insurance can make it easier to deal with.  Thank you for allowing the Smith Insurance Agency in Rochester NY to “Protect you as if you were family.”

A Letter From a Happy Customer to Smith Insurance in Webster

19.12.11

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you had a house fire?  Would you have enough homeowners insurance to cover the loss?  Would it be an absolute nightmare with headaches throughout the whole process of collecting under your homeowners insuranc policy and repairing or rebuilding your home?

Below is a message that we just recieved from a client of ours who had a horrific house fire over the summer.

“Our summer was a mess but God is good and blessed us in spite of spending 3+ months out of our home. Many friends helped us and we made some new friends in Erie Insurance – Nancy Mowins and our main contractor Joe Scofero. Nancy made the process go very smoothly and we have nothing but praise and thanks for how she worked with us and Joe to expedite the whole process. Really, things went smoothly and without a hitch. We moved back into our home on October 9th and have been very please with the way the house and our new furniture etc.. came out.

We are thankful also to have Smith Insurance as our local agents. I new if there were any problems – I could talk to Tom or his brother, but thankfully there were no problems. Many people who I talked to told of unhappy situations they heard of with insurance companies, but I was happy to tell them how wonderful Erie was to us.

We are looking forward to a blessed 2012 and will be a little happy to leave 2011 behind. When school ends this year we will go get another puppy to replace the two labs that we lost in the fire. They were the only truly irreplaceable items for us.

Anyway – Betsy and I wish you and Heidi and your family a very Merry Christmas and hope the 2012 is a great year for you, your family and your business.

- Bill”

We truly appreciate those kind words from Bill, and would love to provide YOU with the same level of service on your Rochester NY Homeowners Insurance.
